April Photo of the day. I am starting my second month on the photo of the day challange! I should actually hit 30 days here in the 2nd week. I will do my best to get a new shot every day and this month will be a challange as I will be on travel 6-11. I plan on brining my laptop with me if I can get net access I can upload some photo's each evening after class. I am going to bring my Canon Powershot Pro1 with me so wish me luck. I am enjoying this challange as this is really streching my abilties.

John (300m) > April 30: The stories I could tell you of days gone by. I was out walking at lunch today when I saw this section of piling on the beach. Looks to be part of a pier or piling that probably got caught in a storm and washed up on our beach here at work. The shot seemed more to present itself to B&W so I thought I would give that a shot. I converted to monochrome and adjusted the sliders in the channel mixer in photoshop to get the contrast level I was after. EXIF Canon Pro1 ISO 50 1/1000; @ f/6.3 50 mm; 0 EV
John (300m) > April 29: Working with light. I did this shot tonight after deciding to try a shot I say in a Nikon picture. Not the same but I like the results. I set this up using a trunk for a table and folded my tripod low. My wife told my daughter I was laying on the floor taking pictures :). I turned off all the lights sans the desktop here and setup the SB200 flashes off the R1 to see what I could do. I set one to bounce behind the trunk on group A, with a blue gel on the lens and hand held another on group B with a red gel. I varied the -ev settings till I got this shot that I was happy with. I was using the Capture control Pro again, tethered to my desktop so I could see my results full screen. That works to those that have never tried it. John (300m) > April 28: Parade of Homes, Keeping room This is a room from the parade of home I shot this weekend. I just finished all 200 shots and have uploaded to my site for my sister and her partner. Anne was pleased today so I am pleased! The house is fantastic, the ladies did excellent work on this house. They won last year BTW in 3/3 categories. This room is called a keeping room and the fireplace to the right goes through to the outside with glass on both sides. John (300m) > April 27: Dad's Buddy. My daughter in her favorite position, on the computer while watching the TV. We just came back from taking some more shots for my sister at the Parade of Homes. I know I need a POD so I took a few around the house, of the fish tank, and got Kara on the computer. :) We spent another 4+ hrs there today. I now have to go through 300+ photo's and pick out the keepers. I want to thank everyone for there kind comments and I will catch up in the next 24 hrs on the comments. This was a challenge for me as it took more time than we figured. This was a simple shot, D200, 18-35mm @ 35mm on board flash, 1/60 sec f/8.0 ISO 250
John (300m) > April 26: Pocket watch I was practing this AM on this watch and some jewelry prior to going to the parade of homes to photo the house for my sister. Se is an interior decorator and she and her partner are doing a house again this year. I bought some strobes to help me in the matter as the colors have to be right. We were there 1-9:30 and I have to go back tomorrow to finish 2 more rooms. I working with camera control pro were the shots go straight to the laptop so I can tell if I have the shot and the color. That is what I did with this pocket watch. This shot was done with the 18-200 and not my macro. I will get to everyone later this weekend, I need to go to bed as I am tired and have to go back tomorrow. Learned a lot today so that should help.
John (300m) > April 25: Seagull sunset on the Chesapeake Bay We got stopped in traffic on the Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel. While sitting on the bridge I grabbed the Pro1 and took this shot out the drivers window. I had to crop to remove the traffic from the other lane on the bridge tunnel. There were a ton of seagulls flying around the tunnel tonight, talk about noisy! This was a spur of the moment shot as I actually took sunrise shots from the seawall this AM. EXIF Canon Pro1 ISO 100 46.3 mm = 185mm in 35 format 1/500 f/5.0 -1/3 EV Out a car window :)
John (300m) > April 24: Serenity on the casemate. Morning shot of the casemate and moat. I went to get a sunrise this am after getting a few fog shot, but the sun was already up and bland. Not a cloud in the sky and hazy. I turned to leave and saw this reflection in the moat and made my way to the top of the casemate wall. I set my little tripod up on the edge of the moat top, you can see the angle from the photo. I set the timer to 10 sec and held the strap lest the camera decide to go for a swim in the moat. The scene was very calm and peaceful this morning. To the right in white is the old MARS station on casemate 24. The bridge is the east gate bridge, there are 3 bridges into the inner fort. Ahead is battery Parrot that is reflecting into the moat. EXIF Canon Pro1 Tripod mounted 1/4 sec using timer f/5.0 ISO 50 -2/3 EV 16mm = 50 in 35mm format
John (300m) > April 23: Lilly of the Valley. I took a big group of shots today, but with overhauling our fish tank. New rocks, pump, plants and recycling 35 gals of water I have not had a chance to look at most of the 80 picture I have in LR. I did run Helicon focus on 3 different stacks in between cleaning the tank. This and the bug I caught on the rosemary turned out well. This shot is straight from the camera no PP sans focus stacking 4 shots. This lilly had opened fully between yesterday and today so I thought I had better get my shot before the bloom fades. I was real happy with this shot to the point that I have not even looked at the remainder that I took today. John (300m) > April 22: Battery De Russey The rain cleared at lunch today so I was able to walk and get a few shots. I took this panoramic while walking. For the anal retentive I know it it not level and goes uphill on the left. The left side is level and that was my starting point for photoshop. Realize I used a 28 mm lens that equates to 18mm in digital so there is some barrel distortion. The original pano was to large for smugmug and I had to reduce the size to fit as it was 41M. History of the Battery: This concrete battery was built between 1898 and 1903. The Coast Artillery began using it in 1904. Originally named after Rene E. DeRussy, but in 1909 that was changed to Gustavus A. DeRussy. Armed with three 12-inch M1895 guns on M1897 disappearing carriages. The battery was modernized in 1908, the platforms widened and the BC Station was built. At first, each gun had its own plotting room underneath, but the elevated two story BC Station replaced these with a new plotting room on its lower level. The battery was decommissioned in 1944. The ladders and stairs have been removed along with the earth embankment to keep people off of this deteriorated structure for safety reasons.
