May Photo of the day. I have made it through 2 months now and working on my third in the photo of the day challenge! I will do my best to get a new shot every day. I am going to bring my Canon Powershot Pro1 with me to work and my D200 in the evening so hopefully I can find something worth wild to post for a daily shot. I am enjoying this challange as this is really streching my abilties.

John (300m) > May 22: Rose Trio
I decided to do something different tonight. I did not have a shot I was happy with and I have been wanting to do some more work with this gradient method I learned from Gerry (Dreamhat). So we have tonight's shot of the variegated roses that I brought into photoshop and worked in layers. This is an easy one to do, only 3 layers. I took the background layer and applied a gradient mask, adding a grey point to get the effect I wanted. I then took the background copy and moved it to the top and using an inverted layer mask opened up the leaves in the background. I then dropped the opacity to 18% to give just a hint of green to this B&W shot. 3rd layer is my copyright.
John (300m) > May 21: psst did you hear the new????
2 seagulls I caught on the seawall walking today. They stayed long enough for me to snap 2 shots before they flew away. I was pleased with this shot, looked great. I caught lots of birds today on my walk. I had a tough time with the choices for today. I did a soft muted B&W heron as an alt, but we like this on the best.

For the record, I am NOT an American dingaling fan! I have heard fingernails dragged across the chalkboard that sounded better!
John (300m) > May 20: Lighthouse
I took this 3 shot HDR at lunch time. I hand held 3 shot at 1 EV apart. I liked the shot and wanted to capture the results of this picture. I do like the way the old lighthouse looks and wanted to reflect this shot the best I could today. The rain had passed long enough for me to walk at lunch so I made the best of my time and took some DP shots.

John (300m) > May 19: Aphid
I was out in the front yard looking for pictures of the day I was lost for a POD stinking out on ideas. I saw lots of little things that were uneventful and nothing jumped at me. I saw this bud and took a picture with my wide angle but was not that interesting. Thought I would try a close shot with the macro to fill the frame. When I did I saw this little bug and got interested. I followed this bug for ~ 15 min to get a good shot. Found out it is an Aphid that eat roses. There are others on the bud you can just make out in the background. This shot was handheld and done by leaning against the house for support. I was at 1.2:1 mag rate Natural light

John (300m) > May 18: Carvin DC127 in Flamed Koa
I have been wanting to get a shot of this guitar for a while now and I saw my chance this morning. I took the shot in my backyard using the ground as a background. I really love the wood on this guitar. The wood is flamed Koa from Hawaii. Guitar is a Carvin DC127 with dual humbuckers and an acoustic bridge.

John (300m) > May 17: Roses are red?
The family was out today doing some shopping and we saw these roses at Trader Joe's. My wife liked them very much so we brought them home. I had not planned on taking a picture os these today, but as I was informed they do not last a long time so I thought I had better get a shot while they were still nice and no dead leaves. I took numerous shots in different positions and liked this one the best. This variegated is very pretty, but makes for a busy shot background and foreground. The lighting is different on this shot with a single SB200 at reduced power firing down and a 350W photostrobe at reduced power shot into a flash umbrella Background is a black matte board.

John (300m) > May 16: Soft view
I took this capture this afternoon after some sun came out. Flower is in our side yard. The black spot is an ant crawling around the center of the flower. I shot at the lower f-stop on the macro to get just a small area of the center and a bit of the pedal in focus. The flower is a soft yellow with a pink outer leaf behind. About the size of a nickel or 3 CM in diameter. Columbine is the name of the plant, thanks Gail.

John (300m) > May 15: Child with a cat
I captured this scene when I was walking today. I thought this was a good shot for the day. This was a young boy that was with his parents at the marina and the cat was at the marina office.
John (300m) > May 14 : Otter
I was out late tonight taking pictures for a client. I was not able to get an acceptable POD so I am using this picture of the otter my daughter and I took last Friday. Great shot and I am happy with this. I am just to tired to do any more tonight. Enjoy the shot.
