May Photo of the day. I have made it through 2 months now and working on my third in the photo of the day challenge! I will do my best to get a new shot every day. I am going to bring my Canon Powershot Pro1 with me to work and my D200 in the evening so hopefully I can find something worth wild to post for a daily shot. I am enjoying this challange as this is really streching my abilties.

John (300m) > May 13: Sunrise on the Bay
What a difference 24 hrs makes. This is the other side of Post, on my way into the office. I could see the sun just starting to come up so I darted into a parking lot near by and grabbed the camera & tripod and headed for the seawall. The other side of the trees you see in the background is where I took yesterdays shot. This is the sheltered channel where they race the hydroplanes in August. Day was nice sun wise, just still cold and very windy.

Karina, this is what I was talking about in my note :) I knew I had a sunrise just not how good till I got home. That 1.5" screen on the Pro1 is tiny. Thanks for the kind words.

John (300m) > May - 12: The Angry Morning Sky
The weather here is bad, we have gail force winds and rain that started this AM. I caught part of the approaching storm when I got to work. I glimpsed the scene and drove down to the seawall to capture a shot of this angry black sky. You could just see the sunrise peaking out of the gap in the clouds. I had to anchor my tripod legs against the seawall rails and hold the strap to the camera lest I not have a camera. The wind was really howling at that point. Limbs down and debris on the road I had not seen on the way to the water

John (300m) > May 11: Mothers Day
Happy mothers day to all you mothers out there. I caught this rabbit having breakfast in our front flower bed when we came home from breakfast. I grabbed the Pro1 that I keep in the car and was able to capture this shot before the bunnies hopped away. This was shot through the passenger window as it was a light rain and I figured lowering the window would spook the wild rabbits. Hence the odd shape crop to remove my car from the picture.

Pro1, ISO 100, f/4.5, ~135mm, 1/250 sec. Added glass, passenger window.
John (300m) > May 10: Flowers in the Rain.
This morning was rainy and overcast so when there was a break in the rain I went out to see the new flowers that are blooming under our weeping cherry. I was able to capture this shot this morning after breakfast and before my daughter and I went out for a "short" trip. Glad I did as we returned much later than I figured. This shot is a focus stack of 2 shots. I tried 4 shots but the halo effect from the out of focus palp was a bit much to deal with. I liked the water on the pedals (my back too from the cherry tree overhead).

John (300m) > May 9: The American Bald Eagle
My daughter and I spent the day together today. This morning we toured the Living museum. I got ~ 85 pictures today and my daughter filled her memory card with 151 pictures. This is one of the two bald eagles in the museum that I was able to photograph. Very majestic looking bird. We got lots of great pictures and I am sure you will get to see more of these shots. I got some great bird shots and I will display one tomorrow and the rest in the gallery. I used my big lens today to get most of these shots.

As Nick asked these birds are here to recover from an injury. The damage is on the right breast and is more noticeable in my 2nd choice here. Eagle front View
John (300m) > May 8: Let it Rain
As you can tell it is raining here. I took advantage of a break in the heavy down pour and went out and snapped a few shots of these Larkspur out by our mailbox that my daughter planted. I shielded the camera as much as I could from the drizzle and took my shots. I feel like the weather right now so I hope to improve by tomorrow when my daughter and I spend the day taking pictures and such :). This spring cold is the pits.

Looks like I am determined to make this month April! Thanks again Kre8ive
John (300m) > May 7 Some time you feel like a nut other times you don't
Orange. I got this idea while looking at sheepshot's site. I took an orange and suspended it in front of the light box (Thanks Oliver) and took a shot with a single SB200 flash lighting the back of the orange to show the texture of the inside fruit. I used my 105 as a prime for this shot to get a lot of orange in the picture. Took a few shots to get the internal focus right to show the veining of the fruit. Thought this would be different as my only daily shot from work was that same Heron from yesterday I saw today along the bay. Not as good as he got spooked real easy today.
John (300m) > May 6: Bird on the moat wall
I caught this "Yellow Crowned Night heron" (Thanks Gail!) standing on the moat wall on my way back to the gym after walking. He kept turning his head watching me but let me take his photo. I was actually leaning over the fence with the camera to get this final shot hence the weird angle. He kept looking but did not fly away.
Good catch on the date kre8ive Fixed :)

John (300m) > May 5: Chamberlin Hotel on Ft Monroe.
I took this shot today at lunch while out walking. I though this would lend itself to a good B&W conversion so I gave it a whirl. I was working with Dreamhat (Gerry) tonight on the gradient map and worked a version of my own with this effect. I did my normal process steps, then added a darkening layer with a blend if for the sky, a small contrast curve then added the gradient mask. Thanks Gerry for the help. I did an alternate that is freaky for today. Basically what happens when you over sharpen to the nth level. Freaky alt DOP
