John (300m) > July 31: Lighthouse in training????
I captured this while walking yesterday. I did not see a lot to take pictures of. The day was hot, hazy and humid. 93, heat index 103 when I was out. So the conditions were really bad for shots. I found this in a garden outside the marina on Post. I captured the shot and balanced using the WhiBal card and hoped for a good shot. I liked how it looked sitting in the shade against the stark white building of the marina in the background.
Happy Friday people! PS if you have not tried the WhiBal card that Bill Pador turned me on to you should. This is positively great for setting the white balance in a shot. Thanks Bill!!
John (300m) > July 30: Lynx - Bobcat
I had the day off yesterday, my father in-law had cataract surgery. He takes care of our daughter during the summer for us. It went very well. My daughter and I spent the day on the road. We joined my wife and father in-law for breakfast and saw the patient home. We then went to the Living Museum to visit the animals and to see what we could photograph. I took over 90 shots, 1/2 still to be done. Temps were very hot, in the 90's but we were in the shade most of the time and enjoyed ourselves. I caught this one in the shade keeping cool. He (according to the guide that passed) was asleep till some noise woke him. I captured this shot by leaning over the top of the fence the best I could with my big 70-200 ED lens I took this shot at f/3.3 looking for the shallow focus and due the low lighting in the shade. The processing was color correct to the whibal card, add some black and clarity in ACR. Rotate the shot in PS and add my copyright. Not bad for 11:30 shot in 90 deg heat.

I am behind on the comments as when we came home from running and dinner a major thunderstorm rolled in and I was not on the PC till I finished this before bed. I will catchup late tonight. Busy day today at work
John (300m) > July 29: Geese on the bay
I spotted a large group of geese going to a bath out on the bay during my walk. I captured a bunch of shots in the hard light but I liked this dude the best. He just stood there while I took the shot and then moved on to the water. There was a group of about 30 geese here and they were bathing and carrying on in the bay and the beach. Shot hand held with the D200 on an overcast day. Have a great day eveyone
John (300m) > July 28: Flowers in the sun
I caught this shot right at 12 today as I was late walking as I spent most of the morning in meeting and on the phone. I caught this in the yard on my way out and spent some time on the ground to get the picture. I was laying in the grass to get the shot when the owner came out :) The Cpt though I was a bit nuts but smiled anyway. I like the texture of the leaves in this shot and the blur behind on the other pods. Temps were really hot, 96 and very humid and I payed the price again. :( I turned off the music and camera and looked for shade. I suffered the heat and it was not fun. I will do better today, more water and less time out and earlier to! Have a great day everyone and thanks very much on the cake shot :) It was good and I finished the cake doing this shot.
Thanks for the name, Lantana
John (300m) > July 27: Cake time!!
This shot was a bit in the making. I actually bought this cake Saturday evening when we were at the bookstore. Just before I took the shot on the water for yesterday's DP. But I started thinking when I got home that this would make a great shot. I got some ideas and was given some advice which I took (thanks!). I planned the shot, but time prevented me from starting till later in the day. I built a new light table from scratch for this POD, learned it a bit to narrow so I will have to mod this. I was tired of fighting of the one made out of cardboard. This one is made of PVC and uses Ripstop Nylon (kite fabric) as a diffuser. I had the material so it was just the PVC corners and time to build. That took longer than I expected as my ideas were not working. So I dropped to basics and got results. I kept the cake in the fridge till I was ready and took some test shots of the setup. I even bought the plate and found the old silver forks and cleaned them for this shot. Bought the cup and raspberries fresh today and I was set. There is a lot to a studio shot. I took numerous shots till I was happy with the results. I ended up using my strobes and SB800's. If you want to see the lighting setup for this shot it is here. Lighting setup There is more to studio setup and work than I expected! Between building the lightbox and the shot I worked from 3-9 yesterday. I did stop for dinner and the cake was good as I ate some of it doing the processing/sorting. :) I had waited long enough. Have a great day everyone
John (300m) > July 26: Available light shot
Today was a very busy day, I started by taking the family to breakfast and then my wife had to go to work. I ended up with a migraine so I lost a few hrs in the morning. I did chores around the house and other items that needed to be done. I did some work on nodal points for pano's. More in the future. We then went out to dinner, bookstore and took some pictures. So by the time I got home to look at shots it was 10PM.
This picture was taken on the Colonial Parkway up near Williamsburg. it is a 30 sec exposure and the vignetting you see on the upper left corner is my hand blocking the car lights from the lens. This is the same pond in the fall at 4 in the afternoon. Lake
This was my Alt shot for today. York River Bridge
John (300m) > July 25: Girl in the fog
I caught this early morning shot on the way to catch a sunrise that was a dud. The shot intrigued me and I took the time to capture and frame the shot. I thought this was a cool shot and I wanted to share with everyone my 6 am capture
Have a great day
John (300m) > July 24: Light experiment
I took a walk yesterday at lunch, I found some interesting subjects. But due to the really flat light of the overcast day and my low choice of ISO, the pictures did not come out as I would have hoped. So there I sat last night again wondering what to do. My wife suggested this geode and I gave it a whirl. I shot using my little white box lit with 2 led flashlights. A white one from the left is the predominant lighting and a small amount from a blue led light I bought tonight on the right. This shot has very little blue, I just liked the lighting in the center better. I added a slight contrast curve to the shot and my copyright. Happy Friday folks! Spent most of the evening losing the battle to my printer :) Tonight is another night!
John (300m) > July 23: Another late night shot
I came home from work with some shots to review for a POD and was content as I thought for sure I had something. Just before we went out to run some errands and get dinner I downloaded the files and had a look. Not as exciting as I thought. Upon return home I discovered I was right, I had 3 shots but as I had my wife give me the critique of the shots she echoed me sentiments of just not a POD as my normal. I did some thinking and at 9PM I came up with lighting this shot. How I did this. I placed this in my white box and lit with 2 tea lights and the "custom" reflectors, i.e. AL foil. I took the shot. Original link below. Then I went into PS , added some contrast, converted to B&W, and added a gradient map. The result you see here. In the conversion I used the red channel only as I did not like the blue and green.
Original shot before PS Origianl
here is the alt shot Alt daily My other choice from my walk.
