300m > April 26: Pocket watch I was practing this AM on this watch and some jewelry prior to going to the parade of homes to photo the house for my sister. Se is an interior decorator and she and her partner are doing a house again this year. I bought some strobes to help me in the matter as the colors have to be right. We were there 1-9:30 and I have to go back tomorrow to finish 2 more rooms. I working with camera control pro were the shots go straight to the laptop so I can tell if I have the shot and the color. That is what I did with this pocket watch. This shot was done with the 18-200 and not my macro. I will get to everyone later this weekend, I need to go to bed as I am tired and have to go back tomorrow. Learned a lot today so that should help.
300m > July 21: Lunch Time! I captured this yesterday at lunch on my walk. This is NOT a macro shot, but taken with my 18-200mm. I was getting getting desperate for a shot as I had a lot of junk. Light was really harsh today and my shots looked really bad. I had run out of water, was hot, thirsty and the heat index was 106. Humm, think I goofed! I will fix the water issue for sure tomorrow. I was just finishing my walk, unhappy as I did not have much and thinking ahead of what I could do when when I got home. I spotted these flowers by the phone building and figured OK another flower shot, they still had some life and the heat had not killed them yet. I saw this bee having lunch and I took ~ 4 shots before he left. This one looks like he is sitting down eating his/her lunch. I liked the shot so I cropped to enhance this and hence my POD. Enjoy.
300m > June 6: Bug on a flower John your fast on the draw I was walking at lunch and I saw this bloom that I had to get a picture of. This is a cactus bloom. I was a bit surprised as I am on the east coast in VA not in the mid west. the bloom was nice and yellow. I was surprised to see this bug come out from under center of the bloom. I was impressed and took the shot. This came out real good. He was going to town on the bloom on the pollen. EXIF D200 105VR ISO 125 1/500 f/10 Spot metering
300m > June 11: The Main Quarters on Post This is the SMC house on the post, the big man. They guy with all the stars. The house is BIG, 12,088 sqft; 11,123 net sqft. Now that is a house. Four floors, a main entertainment area, a sleeping floor with guest rooms, a furnished basement (rare in this area due to the water table), and a finished and central heated/cooled attic. Nice old treatments and details on the quarters and inside. Some will notice the deterioration on the outside, yes it is there. We are a BRAC installation and only critical work is being done to facilities. Fine old quarters with a slate roof. My back was to the Chesapeake bay so that is what there picture window sees and there is a fishing pier for the post to the right. This was the best I could do with the hard light at lunch yesterday when I took this. SMC means senior mission commander, in this case the 4 star general. 300m > June 9: Hot hazy sunrise Red sky in the morning is a sailors warning. Well at 5:50 AM I saw this sunrise over mill creek at work and stopped for a shot. Temps were already 78 degrees with a promise of 99 today. It was 93 heat index 96 at lunch when I walked. This is generated in camera not in photoshop. The sky was really the blood red color so I set the camera to spot metering and exposed for the sun. I love the burning sun on the water so I zoomed in tighter than normal to get this shot. On a side note I got caught like Alex, found out my raw file backup drive had 7.6G left. Going to be busy tonight with DVD's. EXIF D200 18-200mm VR hand held @135mm ISP 125 1/800 sec f/5.6 0 EV spot metered for the sun In LR added +0.6 exposure and +5 black, +17 recovery to reduce hot spots in highlight
300m > May 13: Sunrise on the Bay What a difference 24 hrs makes. This is the other side of Post, on my way into the office. I could see the sun just starting to come up so I darted into a parking lot near by and grabbed the camera & tripod and headed for the seawall. The other side of the trees you see in the background is where I took yesterdays shot. This is the sheltered channel where they race the hydroplanes in August. Day was nice sun wise, just still cold and very windy. EXIF: Pro1 on tripod 1/640 f/3.5 ISO 50 -2/3 EV 85mm Karina, this is what I was talking about in my note :) I knew I had a sunrise just not how good till I got home. That 1.5" screen on the Pro1 is tiny. Thanks for the kind words. John
300m > May 17: Roses are red? The family was out today doing some shopping and we saw these roses at Trader Joe's. My wife liked them very much so we brought them home. I had not planned on taking a picture os these today, but as I was informed they do not last a long time so I thought I had better get a shot while they were still nice and no dead leaves. I took numerous shots in different positions and liked this one the best. This variegated is very pretty, but makes for a busy shot background and foreground. The lighting is different on this shot with a single SB200 at reduced power firing down and a 350W photostrobe at reduced power shot into a flash umbrella Background is a black matte board. 300m > July 12: Simplicity We went out to the James RIver Bridge to capture a sunset from a different vantage point. The sunset looked good till 15 min before set when the sun went behind a bank of clouds. The sky had some moderate color, but no sun. Very cloudy. This is a shot I took of my daughter after she lost interest in taking pictures of the listless sky walking along the waters edge looking for shell. I converted the shot to B&W and was pleased wit the results. I like the simplicity of the shot and the fact that the girl is my daughter in the shot Here is a link to the alt shot I had for today, a night shot along the james river. 300m > June 22: Clematis pedal While walking around the house yesterday I had the thought to photograph some flowers and pedals up close at high magnification. I had gone back in the house to get some assistance in the form of a clamp as the wind was blowing a good clip. I brought out the R1 ring and diffuser clamp, but that did not work as it was to short to hold the rose bush I was working on. I found this clematis pedal that had fallen off the bush from one and used the clamp to hold the pedal to take my picture. I used natural lighting of the day to light the pedal. Mag rate is 1:1 on this pedal. I am headed to Nashville on business today, I have my camera and laptop packed. I am not sure my net access or the time I will have, but I will do my best and catchup when I return.
