John (300m) > July 14: Bad hair day I caught this little gal early on my daily walk. There were a pair of herons down in the moat and I was able to get close enough without my usual scaring them away to get some good pictures. Here is the pair of them on the pipe in the moat Heron Pair The weather was real bad yesterday, heavily overcast, trying to rain so I stayed near the gym facility incase of rain I could run back with my camera. I have now put a big plastic bag in my gym stuff just in case. This gal stood posed on the pipe for me and let me take 4-5 shots. I liked this one the best. 18-200mm lens at 135mm leaning over the moat walk fence to get this shot. The later shot was when I got closer and the male flew in protective :) I took the shot and left them in peace. Shot was color corrected to remove blue - green cast.
John (300m) > Crystal Ink Bottle I am sharing a shot I took for another challenge. I came home last night to discover another loss from the lightning, my main backup external drive is in/out causing problems. Spent 1.5 hrs on the line with tech support ot identify the problem, I was having boot issues. Well the short is the drive is not trustworthy and all my 2004-2008 files are on here :( That is why Lightroom kept locking up and my computer would hangup. I lost 2 days worth of pictures, all the ones I did yesterday and the day before. I have the raw files but all the processing is gone.. I did one for today, but I was not happy with the shot and was tired. I wanted a non flower shot so vs the ones I took so here is one I took for the office supplies challenge. This is a crystal ink bottle that I was changing ink in. I write with fountain pens so I use this to keep my ink on my desk. Right behind my digitizer and phone. Have a great day Folks!
John (300m) > August 2: Glass Art When my daughter and I went to the Living Museum on Wednesday she saw that piece of glass art that she liked but could not afford. Like a good Dad I bought it for her. I told her I did want to photograph the dolphin as a DP and she said Sure! I struggled with this yesterday, the reflections, the lighting, the colors of light. All the odd things that go with multi angle glass work. In the final product I ended up purchasing a second C123A flashlight, I like the color of light they produce, to due the job. A drawback to these lights is they get HOT fast. Trying to hold 2 hot flashlights and the remote trigger while framing the shot and light is a trip. I ended up getting an inspiration and using my microphone stand to hold one of the light and that helped. I took about 30 shots before I decided on this combo. This is a left side shot and a right side shot merged in PS with layers nose to nose. I made a layer around both dolphins and moved them to a new layer. The background is the blue off one of the blue stripes and the frame borders are the yellow, green, and red in the pattern. The depressions/ dark spot on the head is the insets in the glass for the eyes. We are going to frame this shot and hang it on the wall in my daughters bathroom. I think I am going to have to resize as it is 8.5x24 :) Have a great day everyone
John (300m) > July 13: Desert time. Yesterday was a very hectic day for me and I was rapidly running out of ideas for a POD come 8PM. My lovely wife had this idea and I ran with it. This is my daughter's slice of desert that she graciously let me photograph before she ate the piece. I tried various positions and angles on the fork, that is how it got cool whip on it not from samples, to keep the flashback from the shiny stainless steel fork. I liked this angle and lighting the best. Three flashes used in this shot with a home made light box via notes Oliver posted. 1 R1 mounted on top as fill 1 to the side as fill and SB 800 on cord at the side as primary flash. PS Kara, my 12 yr old, made the cake. The streaks are pudding poured in while backing. Decorated with mandarin oranges.
John (300m) > Ever Vigilant Captured on the way to a photo shoot. I saw this on my way into a shot and had to turn around to go back and capture this scene. This is 30 min before sunrise, just starting to get some color in the sky. Scene is the Yorktown Battlefield entrance , crop due to the street signs on the colonial parkway I was on looked a bit ugly in the shot. I took several before I moved on to my next location. Cannon is on silent watch. Have a good day everyone
John (300m) > Oct 22: Textures I saw this fresh pile of sand on the beach where they were building the new seawall. I really liked the textures of the sand and the colors of the sky in the shot. Great abstract feel to this picture. The shot was taken through the walk railings as I was in dress clothes and not able to get into a better position to take the shot. Enjoy the day
John (300m) > Old Time Reflections I captured this on the way into work. One of the views of the marina's I see taking an alternate way in to the office. I really linked the serene feel to the shot and wanted to try something different on this picture. I tried for an old time antique feel to the picture. Thanks for all the comments on the leaves yesterday. Just proves I am nuts and you folks support my habit :) Have a great day
John (300m) > Oct 25: Blowing in the wind I was out yesterday looking for something for the POD when I spied this Crepe Mertle leaf blowing in the wind. It had just rained and was still overcast so I was not sure if I was going to stay dry. I really liked the way the leaf looked so I tried with the wind to capture the leaf with the marco that I had on the camera. I took several shot, but this was the best. The wind would not stop long enough for any thing else. The only PP was some sharpening in PS. Have a good Day
John (300m) > Oct 16: Morning across the bay I captured this on the way into work. This is what I see now on the bay in my commute. I normally carry the tripod to my point and shoot. Yesterday I thought of the light I see reflecting on the water when I go into work and I put my good tripod in my trunk. I took advantage of the equipment as this is a 45 sec exposure in manual. I had to bracket the focus as there was not enough contrast for the autofocus to work. The only PP is a +1/3 EV of exposure. I normally as a rule add nothing to an available light shot. The pier is from a restaurant that passed to the elements after hurricane isabel.
